Well shipmates, it doesn't appear that things are going to improve anytime soon. And waiting a few more days for the inevitable is useless. Therefore, we are CANCELLING the April 4th Submarine Birthday Dinner and Tolling of the Bell.
Federal and state governments, likely soon to be followed by locals, are recommending against meetings of large groups of people (currently 10 or more). It would not be a surprise if they lowered that number, or mandated cancellation of all meetings regardless of number. They've already closed bars and restaurants to on-site service, and I suspect the restrictions will be passed to fraternal and veteran organizations soon... which would force us to cancel anyway.
Beyond the government interventions... the vast majority of our members are in the high risk age group, with our membership average age in the 69-70 years range. Based on responses I've received, nearly all of them are opting for safety and not attending our dinner. Even many of those who have already said they plan to attend are changing their minds and opting out. Based on current counts and responses, we'd probably not have more the 6 or 7 attending.
Cancelling is extremely disappointing for all concerned parties. But the health and safety of our base members is paramount... not to mention that of the VFW post members and staff, and our caterer/cook and her family.
In addition to all that...
- There will be NO April meeting anywhere.
- The May 2nd meeting is still a go, but be prepared... it could also be cancelled by government mandate and/or common sense.
- We will TRY to re-schedule the Tolling Of The Bell Ceremony to a later date.
- We'll also keep you up to date, as best we can, on future activities... Memorial Day (flags on graves and parade), Independence Day parade, etc.
- Finally, we'll do our best to keep you updated about Columbus Base , and anything we get from USSVI national
DINNER PAYMENTS: For those who have already paid for the dinner, we will refund your money within the next few days.
